The Chapel of Many Saints and Sinners
Solo project by Geraldine Javier
2 - 25 November 2012, Project Room
A project about the handmade, The Chapel of Many Saints and Sinners is a private, informal chapel in which are placed twenty-two works: eleven angels and eleven tableaux. Each of these works uses a basic head and torso obtained from Paete, the town in Luzon where wooden saints are hand carved by craftsmen, but she has enhanced, characterized and transformed them with tatting, wax, colour, collage, and objects. Throughout the year, Geraldine Javier has been focusing on the fabric and installation works that form the corollary to her paintings. This project is both a culmination of this set of works and a return to imagery that has always fascinated her.
Geraldine Javier was born in Candelari, Philippines in 1970. She moved to Manila in 1988 and graduated from the University of the Philippines. She continues to live and work in Manila. The Chapel of Many Saints and Sinners is her twenty-third one-woman exhibition.
