Solo exhibition by Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo
31 May - 07 July 2013, Main Gallery & Project Room
In this new body of work Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo develops further his use of pigmented resin and volcanic ash as the material to make paintings with. In this body of work photographs are also combined with the paintings to give extra complexity, colour and depth. The ash as before comes from the recent eruption of Mount Merapi in Jogjakarta. He is fascinated by notions of, as he says, "preserving the maelstrom". Although these are abstract paintings the symbolism of the material and what he does with it is vital.
These are rich, turbulent paintings, a triptych, diptychs, and single panels. A painting from the new and very different Ashflow series will also be shown in which a very different mood exists, one of meditative calm. There is only the one colour, only the one direction.
In the project room he will show a range of smaller work in which he recycles and adapts the residues of resin that he creates when making his paintings. These are experimental works, but give a fascinating insight into future directions in which his work may expand.
2013 is the year in which Arin has become a truly international artist showing in New York (at Guggenheim), Berlin, Hong Kong and elsewhere. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to see a new body of work by one of the most exciting young artists in South East Asia.
