Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo
Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo is driven by the unknown and seeks to challenge the very medium of painting. His recent works are at once abstract and expressive, subjecting synthetic materials such as resin and industrial paint to processes that can only be defined as spontaneous. Illustrating the tensions between solidity and liquidity, Arin also alludes to the tensions between the natural and the industrial. His work captures the fluid and unpredictable nature of gravity’s force by choosing to abandon the paintbrush. More personal works are those made with the ash from the Merapi volcano and pigmented resin or those including photographic images. Each work serves to crystallise the dynamic and playful creative process whilst commenting on the possibilities of painting.
Born 1978 in Bandung, Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo graduated in 2001 from the Faculty of Fine Art and Design at Bandung Institute of Technology. His went forth to study his Masters at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London, returning to Bandung in 2005 where he currently lives and works.
